Planning ahead and having an emergency kit on hand will help equip you for anything that comes your way. Natural disasters and other emergency situations are unpredictable. You’ll need to take precautions and gather information and supplies to be ready in case of an emergency.

Know what to pack in an emergency kit

An emergency kit should contain medical information and supplies, including:

An extra 3-day supply of all medicine (for dialysis and any other conditions)

Necessary medical supplies, such as a first aid kit

A radio, flashlight and batteries so you can keep up with the news

At least 3 days’ worth of dialysis friendly nonperishable food

Have up-to-date personal information – including medication and allergy lists, emergency contact details, your doctor’s phone number and the dialysis center number. You’ll want a paper list so it’s easy to access.

Keep emergency supplies and information in a backpack or bag – something that’s easy to grab and go. Know where your emergency kit is at all times.

Have a communication plan

If there’s an emergency situation in your area, have a plan for communicating with your family, friends, doctor, dialysis center and other care partners.

Keep an up-to-date list of important phone numbers and email addresses (pack a copy in your emergency kit!) and share it with any family or care partners. Also, make sure your contact information at the dialysis center is current so we can reach you and provide help if necessary.

If you need to evacuate your home, have a plan for where to go and how to get there. You may also need to arrange transportation to dialysis appointments. Share your plans with family, friends or care partners so they’ll know how to help.
